Why Join a Sorority?
Moving away from home for the first time and/or attending college is exciting and difficult at the same time. Although you are enthused about embarking on a new part of your life full of opportunities and success, you will miss old friends and familiar faces.
When you pledge a sorority you are not "buying friends" as you may have heard. A sorority is a national organization. You will be a part of something bigger than yourself, a place at U of L to call home, a place you will learn leadership skills, and a place which will provide structured opportunities for involvement at the University. Not to mention, a group of individuals who can provide support to you during those tough college days. And, after you graduate from the University of Louisville, you will then become a member of the Delta Zeta Alumnae group....odds are we have an alumnae chapter in whatever city you relocate to...and then Delta Zeta becomes a wonderful network for you and other women who share the same interest. Delta Zeta is a lifetime commitment....not just four years at U of L!
Why be a Delta Zeta?
As a member of Delta Zeta you instantly gain access to hundreds of amazing girls and a national network over 200,000 members. The Beta Gamma Chapter of Delta Zeta at the University of Louisville has a long history as one of the strongest sororities at U of L and we are very proud of our member's achievements as a chapter and individually as DZs are involved in many campus activities.
This is my first semester in college, and I'm worried about being able to handle the time commitment a sorority will demand. How much time will I actually spend doing Delta Zeta activities?
This answer is you get as much out of something as you put into it. As a new member, you will be required to attend one new member meeting a week as well as a New Member Retreat, a Community Service Project, formal pledging and of course, your initiation. There's always something going on and you'll want to attend more activities than required because it's all so fun. However, at Delta Zeta,
ACADEMICS ALWAYS COMES
FIRST
, so we encourage you to take care of your grades before getting involved. Our chapter members must maintain a 2.5 cummulative GPA to stay active in the chapter.
I saw this cheesy show on MTV called Sorority Life a couple of years ago.
Is Delta Zeta like that?
NO WAY! First and most importantly, we don't haze. The University of Louisville and our Delta Zeta National Organzation both have strick policies against hazing. We don't make any sisters, old or new, do anything they don't want to do, and we make it a point to integrate our sisters so that new girls feel at home the second they walk into our house.
My boyfriend/non-greek friends are worried that if I join a sorority, I won't have time for them.
Many of our sisters have non-greek friends and boyfriends. We want to meet them too! We also encourage you to get to know fellow greeks, and many of our sisters have close friends in other sororities. We're not an exclusive clique...we want to you to meet new people! In Delta Zeta, sisters are required to belong to another organization outside Delta Zeta to allow them to branch out into the rest of the campus community.
My parents are worried that if I join a sorority, my grades will suffer.
The Beta Gamma chapter is very proud of our academic program. Our cummulative GPA for the Fall of 2009 was a 3.262; Spring of 2010 a 3.248, and as a result we ranked #2 of the NPC sororities at U of L both semesters.
Tell your parents that Delta Zeta has resources available to help you keep focused on your grades. We actually have two DZ alumnae on campus who serve as our Faculty Advisor and Academic Advisor. We have resources availalble to help you keep your grades up. We have sisters in almost every major willing to help you schedule your classes, study for tests, sell you their used books, and lend you their notes. We also have chapter incentives that reward sisters for getting an A on a test and not skipping classes. If Delta Zeta teaches you anything, it teaches you the time management skills that will help you throughout college.
What is recruitment like?
It is a LOT OF FUN and a great way to start off the year. Don't let the process intimidate you or scare you from participating....all of the sororities will make sure you feel right at home. We want you to have the best experience possible during recruitment week. When you register for fall formal recruitment at U of L, you will be assigned to a recruitment counselor who will contact you and provide you with all of the information you need to know.
I don't know if I fit the sorority girl stereotype.
Good! Neither do we! Delta Zeta is made up of individuals who contribute their leadership skills and personal talents to the sorority. There's something for everyone in Delta Zeta!
What do Delta Zeta's do for fun?
DZs work very hard during the school year, however, we also love to have fun! We attend fraternity socials and formals, a hayride and crush party in the fall, and a formal in the spring. On the weekends, you will always see Delta Zeta sisters together. And, if you are too tired to go out, bring a DVD to the house and microwave some popcorn. Whether it's late night study sessions or cheering on the Cardinals, Delta Zetas always have fun when they're together.
Does this mean that the members of your chapter are really friends?
The most important thing you can do during recruitment is look around and see how the sisters interact with each other. FRIENDSHIP is what it's all about in the end. Delta Zeta places a huge emphasis on developing sistershood, and the results are evident in our success and everything we do.
Your Delta Zeta sisters will become your FRIENDS FOR LIFE!
